How to Choose a Clinic for Top Surgery Abroad: A Checklist

Traveling abroad for top surgery is a bigger decision than picking the lowest price. Whichever clinic and country you choose, the same handful of questions separate a clinic worth trusting from one that is not — here is what actually matters, and how to check for it wherever you are looking.

Is the surgeon board-certified in plastic surgery?

Board certification is the baseline, not a bonus. It confirms your surgeon has completed accredited training and meets a recognized standard of surgical competence. Any clinic should be able to tell you exactly which board certified each surgeon and where they trained, without hesitation.

Does the surgeon have real experience with gender-affirming procedures specifically?

General cosmetic surgery experience is not the same as experience with top surgery and other gender-affirming procedures. Ask how many of these specific procedures the surgeon performs, which techniques they offer, and how they decide which one fits you. Is pricing transparent, with no surprise fees?

Ask exactly what is included in the quoted price — anesthesia, facility fees, compression garments, and follow-up visits are often billed separately by clinics that quote a lower headline number. A transparent price breakdown that spells out what is and is not included is a good sign you are dealing with a clinic that will not surprise you later.

What does recovery and follow-up support look like?

This matters even more when you are traveling home to another country. Ask what a realistic recovery timeline looks like, and specifically whether follow-up visits can be done digitally once you have left. A clinic that cannot support you remotely after surgery is leaving you on your own during the part of the process that matters most.

Are you supported as an international patient?

Look for clear answers on how long you will need to stay, what documents you actually need, and practical help with logistics like accommodation near the clinic. If a clinic cannot answer these questions clearly before you book, that is worth noticing.

Does the consultation feel like a conversation, not a sales pitch?

A good consultation is a two-way conversation, not a pitch to close a sale. You should be able to ask questions, take your time deciding, and leave with a personalized plan — not pressure to book on the spot.
