Most patients return to office work within 7-10 days of top surgery, resume heavy physical work within 2-4 weeks, and can exercise again after 2-4 weeks. Your compression garment, included in the price, is worn day and night for 4 weeks and then day or night for another 4 weeks. Here is what each stage actually looks like.
How long until I can return to work after top surgery?
If your job is office-based, plan on 7 to 10 days off. If your work is physically demanding — lifting, manual labor, or anything that raises your heart rate significantly — plan on 2 to 4 weeks before you return. Your surgeon will give you a personalized estimate at your pre-surgery consultation based on your specific procedure and job.
When can I exercise again?
Avoid exercise and heavy lifting for 2 to 4 weeks after surgery. This protects your incisions while they heal and reduces swelling. Light walking is encouraged from early on to support circulation — it is structured exercise and heavy lifting you need to hold off on.
How long do I wear my compression garment?
Your compression garment is included in the price of your surgery. Wear it day and night for the first 4 weeks, then during the day or night for another 4 weeks. It supports your chest as it heals and helps minimize swelling — consistent wear in the early weeks makes a real difference to your final result.
Recovery week by week
Week 1: Rest is the priority. Compression garment worn day and night. Most swelling and discomfort are at their peak in the first few days and steadily ease.
Weeks 2-3: Most patients with office jobs return to work around this point. Light daily activity is fine; exercise and heavy lifting are still off-limits.
Week 4: The first phase of garment wear (day and night) ends for most patients; the second phase (day or night) begins. Physical work and exercise can typically resume around this point, depending on your surgeon's assessment.
Weeks 5-8: Garment wear continues part-time through week 8. Swelling continues to settle and your final chest contour becomes clearer.
Is recovery different after body contouring procedures?
Recovery after liposuction or a Brazilian Butt Lift follows a similar pattern but moves slightly faster: office work within 7-10 days, heavy physical work within 2-4 weeks, and exercise typically within 2 weeks. The compression garment is worn day and night for 3 weeks, then day or night for another 3 weeks.
Follow-up care during recovery
All follow-up visits are included in your price, and most can be done digitally — which matters if you are traveling home to another country after surgery. Your surgeon will check your healing progress and answer questions at each stage rather than leaving you to guess.
Every patient heals differently, and this timeline is a general guide, not a guarantee. Your surgeon will give you a recovery plan tailored to your procedure and health at your consultation.
